DPA Applies JIT successfully in Berthing

Damietta Port Authority (DPA) will initiate berthing  of two general cargo ships expected within 24 hours , using Just In Time (JIT) technique.

DPA Chairman, Cpt. Tarek Shahin said That JIT is  a system designed to perform all the required work on time, where the coming ships are notified of berthing and departing times. JIT aims to  reduce the vessel waiting time before entering the port, minimize harmful emissions from ships at port and cut down operating costs.

According to JIT, The shipping agent is committed to submit a berthing request indicating ship arrival time not less than 72 hours and reconfirmation within  24 hours, while the stevedoring company is committed to finish all the freight requests procedures within 24 hours at least.

At the same time, the port authority shall inform the incoming ship of designated berth  and actual departure date according to the adopted standard rates.

JIT is still under review by the International Maritime Organization and if approved, Damietta Port will be one of the first ports in the world to  apply it successfully  even before being  approved by IMO.
