After Several studies it was officially decided to construct a new port in Egypt to accommodate the increasing volume of Egyptian foreign trade.

Construction began 1 st Mai 1982. In October 1982 the port received the 1 st ship carrying 3400 tons of sheet piles from France

Presidential decree no. 3/7/1985 issued on 16 july at 1985, establishing damietta port authority. The port was officially opened on 26 july at 1986.
